IndyCar driver Wickens flown to hospital after scary crash

The 29-year-old from Guelph, Ont., was attempting to pass Ryan Hunter-Reay when the two cars slightly touched.

Wickens launched over Hunter-Reay's vehicle and sailed into the catchfence, where the main body of his IndyCar spun several times before landing back onto the track in pieces.

Officials said the race would not resume for at least an hour as workers repaired the catch fence. "Robert Wickens was awake and alert when he came here and he's being transported to LeHigh Valley Cedarcrest hospital in Allentown for evaluation".

Hunter-Reay, James Hinchcliffe, Pietro Fittipaldi and Takuma Sato were among the drivers collected in Sunday's wreck.

Wickens' vehicle drove over Hunter-Reay and went air born just as cars were reaching top speed.

The IndyCar race at Pocono Raceway remains on hold following a crash that sent driver Robert Wickens to the hospital. Hinchcliff was cleared and released from the medical center.

The Pocono staff needed about two hours to fix the track and make it safe for the rest of the race. That's how I got Veach, a couple of guys. Fittipaldi, who already has a left-leg fracture from a sports vehicle crash in Belgium in May, complained of foot pain, but was able to be released without further injury. Team owner Dale Coyne said Fittipaldi had a sore ankle and did not believe it was broken again.

"It is just bad, but I am so glad he is awake and alert". Pigot's auto did not return to the race but the first eight laps were run under the yellow flag.

Scott Dixon pits during the IndyCar auto race at Pocono Raceway.

Scott Dixon leads the championship standings as he chases his fifth IndyCar championship.

Then on Sunday, moments after the green flag started the 500-mile race, Graham Rahal misread the acceleration of cars in front of him and hit Spencer Pigot.

The race was eventually restarted, with Alexander Rossi dominating, leading 180 of the 200 laps on the way to record his third victory of the season. But the championship leader's race improved along with Marco Andretti with timely third stops aimed at gaining some clean air, vaulting up to fourth and third places, respectively.

After 14 races, Dixon has accumulated 530 points to 501 for Rossi. Numerous drivers admitted they thought about what had happened to Wickens and chose to take a more cautious approach to the remainder of the contest.

"We just like to be able to come in and see the cars, and it's just a lot of excitement when you see the cars running at the same time", Farley said. You don't want to see that happen to anyone.
