Malcolm Turnbull: Under-pressure Australia PM drops climate policy

Many are looking to the hardline home affairs minister Peter Dutton to launch a leadership bid, amid speculation that he already enjoys the support...

In a bid to placate unruly coalition MPs, Mr Turnbull on Monday unveiled a revamped NEG and announced that legislation to put in place a 26 per cent emissions cut would not go ahead at this time.

The outbreak of leadership speculation has frustrated and anxious Mr Turnbull's supporters.

Mr Abbott has been the most vocal of several government backbench MPs who have argued against legislating an emissions target.

"I'm focused on getting energy prices down and I'll leave you to all of the speculation", he told the ABC.

Some conservatives, including former prime minster Tony Abbott, have publicly spoken out against the National Energy Guarantee, and there are reports Home Affairs Minister Peter Dutton is being urged to run for the leadership.

"It's not toxic in the party room like it was under Abbott", says one MP. "Let's fight the Labor Party on this - it's the only way to win the election", Mr Abbott said. It's not about him, its not about me.

Australia remains on track to meet its Paris climate accord commitments, despite the change in policy.

"As long as we get on and focus on the things we are doing for Australians. there is no reason why we can not get on and win the next election.' - Liberal frontbencher Simon Birmingham insists Malcolm Turnbull is 'absolutely" safe.

Ten News reported on Monday night Mr Dutton has an interest in two child care centres in suburban Brisbane through the RHT Family Trust.

It follows growing concern among the future of the Government with backbenchers and ministers questioning Mr Turnbull's future even though there is no push to tap a replacement. On Friday, Mr Turnbull agreed not to enshrine the target in law while insisting he would nonetheless keep it.

Adding further strain to Mr Turnbull's leadership are a string of poor public polls.

A Fairfax-Ipsos poll published today showed 55 per cent of voters surveyed supported Labor and only 45 per cent supported the government.

Asked what sort of a leader Mr Dutton would make, Mr Zimmerman told Sky News: "I don't think that is going to happen any time soon".

It comes after former deputy prime minister Barnaby Joyce suggested Turnbull should reconsider his ability to lead the Coalition to victory before the next federal election.

Defence Industry Minister Christopher Pyne, a key figure in rounding up moderate Liberal votes for Mr Turnbull, said Cabinet was "100 per cent united" behind the Prime Minister.
