Taliban overrun Afghan army base, kill 17 troops

The other is a propaganda war, in which the Taliban claimed to have shut down the nearby highway, killed hundreds of government troops and seized strategic official facilities, even as Afghan and USA officials repeatedly asserted that the city was under government control and the insurgents were being systematically cleared out.

"We have received initial reports of a number of civilian casualties and of people trying to reach safe areas outside of the city", said Rik Peeperkorn, acting Humanitarian Coordinator for Afghanistan.

The pictures have been released amid persistent claims by the Taliban group regarding the capture of key governmental infrastructures, including the central prison and provincial security commandment.

An army spokesman, Mohammad Hanif Rezaee, said 100 Afghan soldiers were at the base, known as Camp Chinaya, when the Taliban began their assault against it on August 12.

Analysts have said the insurgents may be seeking to demonstrate strength as they come under increasing pressure since the ceasefire to join peace talks.

The assault, which shocked the country, raises fresh questions over parliamentary elections scheduled for October 20 as well as over hopes for peace talks with the Taliban, which had grown following a three-day truce in June.

An Afghan aid group is offering to help with the wounded in the eastern city of Ghazni where critical battles are underway between government forces and the Taliban and where the local hospitals have been overwhelmed with casualties.

According to official officials and residents, Taliban has taken over most of the rural areas in the Ghazni province even as they continue to battle in Ghazni itself.

The assault in Ghazni and the fall of the base also illustrate the challenges facing Afghan forces as they battle insurgents across the country, said analyst Abdul Hamid Sofof.

"When the fighting intensified, we knew we would die if we didn't leave our home to travel to Kabul", Ghazni resident Yassan Yassan, 21, told Al Jazeera, adding the Taliban had cut electricity and water supplies across the city.

Separately, provincial governor Waheedullah Kalemzai, confirmed to VOA by phone that insurgents have been flushed out of the capital city.

Taliban launched an attack on Ghazni city on 10 August and is said to have entered the city from different sides.

"Bodies of Taliban fighters and police can be seen in the streets".

"We wanted to convey a message to the Americans, their allies and the puppet government in Afghanistan that if we want, we can target them anytime and anywhere", he said.

The fighting has brought civilian life to a standstill, with most residents sheltering indoors.

The Taliban are fighting to expel foreign forces, topple the government and impose their version of hardline Islamic law 17 years after they were ousted by USA -backed forces.

An injured boy rides in an ambulance on August 13, 2018, after being evacuated from Ghazni, where Afghan forces fought to repel a fierce Taliban attack.

'It is a tragedy that the base fell to the enemy.

Other Afghans, including some officials in Ghazni, complained that their recently growing alarm about the insurgent threat had been ignored by officials in Kabul. "Large parts of the base are still under the Taliban control", Rahmani said.

From several accounts of Ghazni residents who escaped the besieged city, it was clear that the insurgents had sowed terror among the civilian populace.

'Those who can are fleeing'. "It will take months for it all to be rebuilt", he said.

"As long as the planes were in the sky, things were calm, but as soon as they left, the Taliban began attacks again", Salim said.

"When we begged them to not harm us".
