Apple Bows to the Chinese Market Again With Latest iPhones

At 6.1-inches, versus 5.8-inches, the iPhone XR is larger than the iPhone Xs but also cheaper. The thicker, less flexible LCD display panel results in slightly larger bezels all around the XR than on the OLED iPhones.

That price point makes it less expensive than the iPhone 8 Plus; its affordable price combined with state-of-the-art technology is something the company is "very proud" of.

With a bigger screen comes a whopping 3 million pixels, so you will view photos, videos, and games sharpest on the iPhone XS Max.

With the launch of the iPhone XS, Apple also advances some existing features, such as making face recognition operate faster than before, with the phone's TrueDepth perception in its front camera.

This means that the new-generation iPhones aren't exactly new designs, but come with updated features instead. That's the magic of aspect ratios: The XR's screen is taller and narrower and goes right up to the edge of the phone, with the infamous notch at the top, so Apple can quote 6.1 inches while making a physically smaller phone. But that's about R4,000 less than the starting price for the XS, and XR comes with a bigger screen. The XR will be available in three storage variants - 64GB, 128GB and 256GB, and in five colour variant - white, black, blue, yellow, coral and a (PRODUCT) RED edition as well. Like those, the phone doesn't have a home button; rather, you simply tap to wake it and swipe up to return to the home screen.

Adding on the camera capabilities of the iPhone X with its 12-megapixel dual camera system, iPhone XS and XS Max introduce Smart HDR, which increases detail and dynamic range of photographs. The phone is water resistant, it has wireless charging, and no, it has no headphone jack.

This applies to all the iPhone that are part of the 2018 lineup, including the iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, iPhone XR, iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, iPhone 7 and the iPhone 7 Plus. While last year's premium priced iPhone X helped boost the company's smartphone revenue, the stagnating unit sales are holding back the company's overall growth, and have led to declining market share.

There's also Dual-SIM support but for those outside of China would need to use an e-SIM for the secondary connection. At $749, I think this is really the sweet spot for iPhones this year. Despite being all glass and steel, the iPhone XS Max isn't slippery at all. However, the XR loses out on 3D Touch and relies on Taptic Feedback for launching the camera or the flashlight.
