Camera test reveals Joaquin Phoenix as The Joker

Principal photography has begun on Warner Bros. Realistic, rumpled, and totally bonkers without being over-the-top, this is exactly the kind of look that could make this film feel as grounded and demented as it angles to be.

Earlier this week, we got our first look at Joaquin Phoenix in character for Todd Phillips as-yet-untitled Joker movie. The makeup itself appears to be based off of a much more traditional clown style than we have previously seen for the Joker.

Worth noting: this is just a camera test. Phoenix's expressions are likely purely a test of how the makeup acts under different conditions.

The official description: "Under the direction of Todd Phillips, the film centers around the iconic arch nemesis and is an original, standalone story not seen before on the big screen".

A previous headshot of Phoenix from the film called him Arthur - which fans quickly connected to Arthur Fleck, The Killing Joke's Joker.

Phoenix is the third person to play the Joker in the last ten years, proceeded by Heath Ledger, who passed away in 2008, and Jared Leto. Warner Bros. describes it as a gritty character study and a broader cautionary tale.

Joker is expected to debut in theaters on October 4, 2019.

Co-stars include Robert De Niro, Zazie Beetz, Bill Camp, Frances Conroy, Brett Cullen, Glenn Fleshler, Douglas Hodge, Marc Maron, Josh Pais, and Shea Whigham.
