Eliud Kipchoge sets new marathon world record in Berlin

Eliud Kipchoge sets new marathon world record in Berlin

Ahead of the race, Kipchoge, the defending Berlin champion, denied wanting to have a crack at fellow Kenyan Dennis Kimetto's world record, saying he was merely after a personal best, but he left little doubt about his intentions when the starting gun fired in ideal running conditions in Berlin.

By the half way mark, Kipchoge had completely imposed himself on the race with chasing compatriot Wilson Kipsang and Amos Kipruto nowhere in sight.

Kipchoge ran at the front from the very first metre, and despite some turbulent times in the first third of the race when his pacers faltered, stormed home to take another win and lower the world record by a remarkable 78 seconds.

"The last pacesetter went out at 25km mark but that still inspired me to continue pushing alone", explained Kipchoge adding that he shall defend his title perhaps with another new record next year.

That 10km time was 23 seconds faster than Dennis Kimetto's world record pace, but Kimetto ran an incredibly fast second half. "I will come back next year", he said. "That's what pushed me in the last kilometres".

"So I want to thank everyone who has helped me", said Kipchoge, who had won in Berlin in 2015 and 2017.

He finished second in Berlin a few months later behind Wilson Kipsang, a fellow Kenyan who needed to set what was then a world record to outlast Kipchoge in the final miles. By 40 kilometrers, reached in 1:55:32, a world record looked a certainty. It is the first time in the history of marathon racing that three women break 2:19 in a single race.

Kenya's Eliud Kipchoge knees down after winning the Berlin Marathon setting a new world record on September 16, 2018 in Berlin.

He kept injecting the pace and by the 30km mark, he was a massive 52 seconds inside World Record pace having covered the distance in a time of 1:26:45. "I didn't know that what I was believing translated to 2:01 but I'm happy for it".

"I lack words to describe this day", said a beaming Kipchoge, a former world champion over 5,000-metres and marathon gold medallist at the Rio de Janeiro Olympics in 2016. The celebration continued with Kipchoge taking pictures and embracing fans while the next runner would cross the finish line four minutes and 44 seconds later.
