Georgia Declares Emergency as Hurricane Florence Approaches

She said at least 60 to 80 of their 180 rooms are booked by people fleeing from SC or North Carolina, but they have plenty of practice housing evacuees since many leave the Jacksonville beaches when hurricanes pass through the area.

Florence is being steered toward the coast of the Carolinas by a strong dome of high pressure aloft over the western Atlantic Ocean.

With South Carolina's beach towns more in the bull's-eye because of the shifting forecast, OH vacationers Chris and Nicole Roland put off their departure from North Myrtle Beach to get the maximum amount of time on the sand.

Florence is now been downgraded to a Category 3 hurricane, is expected to make landfall in the US, Thursday as an "extremely dangerous" hurricane according to the National Hurricane Center.

Florence's top winds were clocked on Thursday evening at 90 miles per hour (150 km/h) as it churned in the Atlantic Ocean, down from a peak of 140 miles per hour (224 km/h) earlier this week when it was classified as a Category 4 storm.

However, there is also a risk of inland flooding as parts of North Carolina could receive 40 inches (1m) of rainfall.

Florence is a large hurricane and will affect much of North and SC.

Florence is bearing down with such strength that forecasters say she may literally reshape the Carolina coastline. Michael Walden, an economist at North Carolina State University, calculates that Florence will deduct about $200 million of output a day from North Carolina's $550 billion-a-year economy until business returns to something close to normal.

In fact, as with the aftermath of previous hurricanes, the region could eventually receive an economic boost once construction crews come out to rebuild and fix damage and as insurance payments and federal disaster aid flow in.

"In the life of the storm's forecasted southward track after making landfall, I encourage Georgians to be prepared for the inland effects of the storm as well as the ensuing storm surge in coastal areas".

Maryland, North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia and Washington states have all already declared states of emergency ahead of the storm.

The blasting wind and surging water may also damage some of the 16 nuclear reactors located in North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia.

The Michigan-sized storm is set to linger for days and cause catastrophic flooding with up to four feet of rain and 13-foot storm surges.

Duke Energy Co. said Florence could knock out electricity to three-quarters of its 4 million customers in the Carolinas, and outages could last for weeks.

Wilmington, North Carolina, just north of where Florence appeared headed for shore, grew empty and quiet on Wednesday. "It's going to happen".

And if Florence weren't enough, other storms out there are threatening people. "But no matter how bad it's going to be, it will pass and our job will be to rebuild this community together".
