How unsafe is Hurricane Florence?

With Hurricane Florence spinning through the Atlantic Ocean and threatening to slam into SC later this week, Gov. Henry McMaster ordered mandatory evacuations for the state's entire coastline beginning at noon Tuesday. Virginia's governor ordered a mandatory evacuation for some residents of low-lying coastal areas, while some coastal counties in North Carolina have done the same.

The earliest reasonable time that tropical storm force winds will reach the coast of the Carolinas is Wednesday night, but the most likely time is sometime Thursday morning, the hurricane center predicted on Monday.

Hurricane Florence is expected to make landfall on Thursday but swells are already affecting the US East Coat.

Tim Terman and his wife live in Southport, near Bald Head Island, North Carolina. NCDOT said the ferries would be aiding in evacuation. Since reliable record-keeping began more than 150 years ago, North Carolina has been hit by only one Category 4 hurricane: Hazel, with 130 miles per hour winds, in 1954. "This thing is going to stop, and it's going to rain - and it's going to rain".

Combined with high tides, the storm surge could swell as high as 12 feet. It also said prisoners from four jails have been moved farther inland. The president has spoken to the governors of both Carolinas and Virginia, the White House said Monday.

Beaufort County public schools will be closed Tuesday through the rest of the week, a school district news release said.

"It is going to be. a long-term recovery", Byard said. Hopefully, in the next couple of days, we'll have a better idea of how this will play out.

Residents prepared by boarding up their homes and stripping grocery stores bare of food, water and supplies. He figured the forecasts were too ominous to stay.

"Go ahead and put those things together now and if you can do that we'll be a much more resilient community", Jones said.

The storm may bring landslides, up to 20 inches of rain and flash flooding for the Hawaiian islands.

Once they get to their destination the team will shelter in place until the storm passes.

"I'll make an evaluation tomorrow (Wednesday) afternoon. We're just a strip of land - we're a barrier island", she said.

"Do you want to get hit with a train or do you want to get hit with a cement truck?" said Jeff Byard, an administrator with the Federal Emergency Management Agency. Its maximum sustained winds have dropped slightly to 110 miles per hour (175 kph).

McMaster previously declared a state of emergency in anticipation of Florence's arrival.

Heavy rain in the Washington area over the weekend had already led to flooding in historic Alexandria, Virginia, local media reported, and the National Weather Service issued a flood watch for part of the Potomac River.

"This one really scares me", National Hurricane Center Director Ken Graham said.

South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster said an estimated 1 million people would be fleeing his state's coast, with eastbound lanes of Interstate 26 heading into Charleston and US 501 heading into Myrtle Beach reversed to ease the exodus.

In Virginia, mandatory evacuations began Tuesday morning for about 245,000 residents in a portion of Hampton Roads and the Eastern Shore area.
