The National Hurricane Center warned the threat of tornadoes was increasing as Florence neared shore and South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster said the heavy rains could trigger landslides in the western part of his state.

The storm's maximum sustained winds were clocked at 120 miles per hour (193 km per hour), down from a peak of 140 mph a day earlier before Florence was downgraded from a Category 4.

But authorities warned it will still be an extremely unsafe hurricane.

An extremely powerful hurricane is forecast to make landfall in the southern part of the United States later this week.

But the hurricane's sheer size meant it could batter the U.S. East Coast with hurricane-force winds for almost a full day, according to weather forecasters.

"This will likely be the storm of a lifetime for portions of the Carolina coast", the National Weather Service in Wilmington, North Carolina, wrote on September 11.

"Hurricane Joyce is also in the Atlantic so we need to see how those two systems are going to move around each other because that could have an impact".

Residents scrambled to flee as the category four storm, with winds of 225kmh, approached.

Transportation companies in Georgia and the Carolinas sprinted to secure property and employees in the path of Hurricane Florence on Wednesday as disruptions to the US supply chain were already being felt.

"This is going to be a Mike Tyson punch", said a spokesperson from the Federal Emergency Management Administration.

Georgia Governor Nathan Deal, concerned the storm would bring devastation south, issued an emergency declaration for all 159 counties in his state.

The storm was centred about 835 miles (1340 kilometres) southeast of Bermuda and moving west at 7 mph (11 kph).

Millions of people were expected to lose power from the storm and restoration could take weeks.

The East Coast isn't the only area facing the brunt of a storm.

In Fayetteville, a North Carolina city of about 210,000 people about 90 miles inland, authorities told thousands of residents near the Cape Fear River and Little River to get out of their homes by Sunday afternoon because of the flood risk. As of Saturday, about 676,000 homes and businesses were without power in North Carolina, along with 119,000 in SC. Hurricane Helene and Subtropical Storm Joyce were off in the Atlantic, posing no threat.
