I never wanted to leave Spurs, says Toby Alderweireld

The centre-back failed to agree terms over a contract extension with the club and, as a outcome, was hotly tipped to join Manchester United this summer.

Alderweireld has been embroiled in a contract standoff with Tottenham for much of 2018.

Toby Alderweireld has dismissed the rumours he wanted out of Spurs during the summer transfer window.

"Everyone was saying everywhere that I absolutely wanted to leave Tottenham", Alderweireld told the media ahead of Belgiums UEFA Nations League clash against Iceland.

"Tottenham? They said I wanted to leave, all wrong, it's not true, I want to help the club do something important, and what was written about me in the summer did not correspond to the truth". To be in the first team again is a victory for me.

Belgian website HLN reported a fortnight ago that Tottenham were planning to re-open contract talks with the defender. So, I had to battle to get my place back in the team.

Alderweireld is yet to agree the terms of a new contract with Tottenham, and his current deal, which expires after the 2019-20 season, includes a clause that will allow him to leave for £25m next summer.

Pochettino is clearly holding no grudge against the 29-year-old and has started him in three of their most recent Premier League games.

Opinion from Spurs fans is split, with some happy at his comments and others reserving judgement until he signs a new deal.

"But from everything that Alderweireld's saying, he's sending messages that he wants to stay".
