JPMorgan CEO says "I could beat Trump", then backtracks

JPMorgan CEO says

Chief Executive James Dimon sounded off on President Donald Trump at a bank event on Wednesday, saying he could prevail over Mr. Trump in a presidential contest.

He also addressed Trump's social standing in NY. "I should not have said it". "It wasn't a gift from Daddy". The off-the-cuff outburst "proves I wouldn't make a good politician", Dimon said.

"I should not have said it", Dimon said in a statement.

"I mean, I've said this before Trump was elected". And I grew up in a poorer part of Queens than he did, but I am a banker. "I am part of the elite", Dimon continued. They look at him as the upstart who punched the elite in the nose every day.

Soon after his remarks on Wednesday, Dimon moderated them, emphasizing that he isn't running for president.

"Opportunity is not shared equally across neighborhoods", Dimon said a statement.

Dimon has previously said he has no intention of running for the US presidency, saying he's not sure being a corporate leader translates well into the political arena. There was speculation, after President Barack Obama's election, that he would be named Treasury secretary, but the job ultimately went to Timothy Geithner. He is likely not as smart as he thinks he is if he believes either political party would ever back a Wall Street investment banker for president, a profession that is viewed extremely negatively by the voting public.

Trump disbanded the board after he was criticized for failing to sufficiently condemn white supremacists in the aftermath of Charlottesville's rally last August.

The comments come at a JPMorgan-sponsored event where the outspoken Dimon was answering questions from a moderator about whether he would might be interested in throwing his name in the mix in a 2020 fight for the presidency.

This is not the first time Dimon has taken back things he's said about Trump.
