Others described Annan as a father-figure and a source of national pride.

His role at the UN's first black African leader was "an honor for Ghana", he said.

Also, Professor Awasom delved into what Kofi Annan stood for and how he sold Africa to the world.

She thanked "God for giving him an extraordinary man who always believed in her strength".

"I don't know when we [Africa] shall again get another United Nations secretary general", Kadaga said.

He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2001 for helping to revitalise the worldwide body, during a period that coincided with the Iraq War and the HIV/Aids pandemic.

However, his other foray as an arbiter between warring factions in Kenya in the wake of the 2007 presidential polls helped pour olive oil on troubled waters in the East African country.

Kenyan opposition leader Raila Odinga will be among those attending Thursday's ceremony, his office said.

A Thanksgiving Service would be held today for the late Kofi Annan at the main auditorium of the Accra International Conference Centre where President Akufo-Addo would be in attendance. Kofi Annan could say everything, sometimes without uttering a word.

Mr. Annan who served two terms as at the top United Nations job, died on August 18 while on admission at a hospital in Bern, Switzerland.

Mourners have thronged to the conference centre in Accra, where his coffin has been kept since his body arrived on Monday, and where the funeral was held. One of our illustrious sons is lying here.

Mr Annan had taught him "the benefit of humility, the benefit of honesty, the benefit of decisiveness, and diplomacy from the grassroots", he told AFP.

He staunchly opposed the USA -led invasion of Iraq in 2003 and later served as the first United Nations envoy at the start of Syria's war, but quit after world powers failed to fulfill their commitments, saying: "I lost my troops on the way to Damascus".

Maria eulogised her husband as "a man who challenged all people around him to make at least a step for a better world".

"There are a lot of Ghanaians who can take on the mantle and do similar, like he did, but not like him because he is a unique individual".

Cleaner Akwo Kwame Johnson, from neighbouring Ivory Coast said he wanted to pay his last respects to "our great father".

"He was a president to all the world", he added.

Pointing to his time at the helm of the UN, Guterres said Annan had an nearly mystical sense of the role of the UN as a force for good in a world of ills.

Anyekai Oddoye, who works in Ghana's cocoa sector, said he whispered a prayer as he passed his coffin and wished him well.

"Stubborn optimist that he was, he would want us all to look forward with hope and keep striving to create a freer, fairer and more peaceful world".

Scores of world leaders past and present, as well as royalty, are expected in Accra for Annan's funeral.

A private burial followed at Accra's military cemetery, with full military honours and a 17-gun salute.
