McMaster to SC coast: ‘Leave now’ ahead of Hurricane Florence

The National Hurricane Center said early Friday that a gauge in Emerald Isle, North Carolina, recently reported 6.3 feet (1.92 meters) of inundation. Storm surge is why many of you have been placed under evacuation and we are asking citizens to please heed a warning.

Once again the forecast is subject to change as the system moves closer to the coast.

"Some areas across the east coast could see over 20" of rain alone, not to mention the inundation of the storm surge which could be over 9′ in some parts of the Carolinas.

The effects of Hurricane Florence can already be felt along the coast of North Carolina as of 12 p.m. on September 13.

There is a danger of flash flooding and river flooding, particularly in the Pee Dee, Quagliariello said.

The police chief of a barrier island in Florence's bulls'-eye said he was asking for next-of-kin contact information from the few residents who refused to leave. The Saffir-Simpson scale that meteorologists use to measure hurricanes reflects only the wind speeds involved in the storm, and right now Hurricane Florence's winds are hovering at maximum speeds of about 110 miles per hour (175 km/h).

Hurricane Florence has begun battering it's way through the North Carolina coastline with heavy rain and high winds in what people fear could lead to the deaths of "a lot of people". It is moving northwest at 17 miles per hour. "It's chilling, even from space", said Gerst.

Florence is expected to make landfall at noon local time on Friday and is moving towards land with wind speeds of 90mph (150 km/h).

Another 8 million people live in areas covered by hurricane and tropical storm warnings.

With the brunt of the storm yet to come, a gauge on the Neuse River in New Bern, a city near the coast, was already recording 3m of inundation, the National Hurricane Center (NHC) said.

In contrast to the hurricane center's official projection, a highly regarded European model had the storm turning southward off the North Carolina coast and coming ashore near the Georgia-South Carolina line. The more it hovers just off shore, the more potentially deadly storm surge it could push on-shore.

Overall, the storm is 400 miles wide.

Its maximum sustained winds dropped slightly from 110 miles per hour earlier Thursday to 105 miles per hour, but the storm remains a Category 2 hurricane that is expected to cause widespread catastrophic damage.

North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper told a news conference that the "historic" hurricane would unleash rains and floods that would inundate nearly the entire state in several feet of water. The power company has warned that up to 3 million people could be left without power for an extended period of time following Hurricane Florence.

"We expected it to strengthen and then as it approached the coast to weaken somewhat", Abrams says.

He said hurricane-force winds extended outward 80 miles from the center of the storm and tropical storm-force winds extended almost 200 miles out.
