Mother, infant are first two confirmed deaths from Hurricane Florence

Once a Category-4 hurricane with winds of 225kph, the hurricane was downgraded to Category 1 on Thursday night.

Hurricane Florence, weakened but still unsafe, has crashed into the Carolinas on Friday as a giant, slow-moving storm that stranded residents with floodwaters and swamped part of the town of New Bern at the beginning of what could be a days-long deluge.

The eye of the hurricane made landfall at Wrightsville Beach, just outside Wilmington, on Friday morning, with winds of over 100mph, then stalled and began crawling inland at just 3mph.

On the morning of September 14, the National Hurricane Centre warned that "catastrophic" flooding and "life-threatening" storm surges were expected to spread inland.

The photo shows just how huge Florence looks, with its wind field stretching for hundreds of miles. Hurricane Florence will slow down as it approaches the coast and moves inland.

The National Hurricane Center said a gauge north of Wilmington in Emerald Isle, North Carolina, reported 1.92 metres of inundation.

A warming climate also means that the atmosphere can hold more and more water vapor, fueling hurricanes with even more water that can fall on coastal areas.

About 10 million people could be affected by the storm and more than one million were ordered to evacuate the coasts of the Carolinas and Virginia.

Flooding and a strong storm surge prompted more than 90 calls to the emergency operation center in Craven County, N.C., for residents trapped in vehicles and homes, spokeswoman Amber Parker said.

Officials said some 1.7 million people in the Carolinas and Virginia were warned to evacuate, but it's unclear how many did.

At least 188,000 people were without power in North Carolina and SC early on Friday.

Hurricane-like conditions are expected to arrive in the areas covered by warnings by Thursday night or early Friday.

Once a Category 4 hurricane with winds of 140 miles per hour (225 kph), the hurricane was downgraded to a Category 1 on Thursday night. Coastal towns in the Carolinas were largely empty, and schools and businesses closed as far south as Georgia.

U.S. President Donald Trump took a moment on Friday to thank those responding to emergencies across the Carolinas. "And you don't need power to sling booze", said owner Eli Ellsworth.

"We aren't going to try to restore power for quite some time, probably", Outlaw, the mayor, said.

"We have been up here for like three or four hours", Perry added, "and there's no windows up here in the attic, so I put a light in the window so they would know someone's here".
