Paul Manafort pleads guilty in deal with special prosecutors, NBC News reports

But Schiff did suggest a few possible ways in which Manafort - who was convicted last month on tax and bank fraud charges and faced more legal jeopardy - could shed light on questions involving possible Trump campaign conspiracy with Russian sabotage of the election or obstruction of justice. Nothing linking President Trump personally to any criminal acts surfaced during the first Manafort trial in Virginia. Usually it helps you get a pardon down the road.

Manafort's conviction in Alexandria, Virginia, last month was at a trial arising from Mueller's investigation.

The case was brought by Mueller's team, which is probing potential crimes related to the 2016 election.

The lengthy document says Mr. Manafort earned more than $60 million lobbying the U.S.as an unregistered agent of pro-Russian interests in Ukraine, then went to extensive efforts to launder the money, stashing it in offshore havens and even lying to his own accountants about it.

That could be potentially damaging for Donald Trump and his eldest son, Donald Trump Jr., as Manafort was present at the Trump Tower meeting in 2016 where members of the campaign met with a Kremlin-connected lawyer promising dirt on Hillary Clinton.

At the time of Gates' plea, Manafort issued a statement saying he "had hoped and expected my business colleague would have had the strength to continue the battle to prove our innocence".

Former Trump national security adviser Michael Flynn leaves federal courthouse in Washington, July 10, 2018, following a status hearing.

Rudy Giuliani, the former New York City mayor who is now representing Trump in the Russian Federation probe, told Reuters on Friday before the hearing that a guilty plea would not crush Manafort's chances of receiving an eventual presidential pardon.

On 22 August, Trump wrote on Twitter: "Unlike Michael Cohen, he refused to "break" - make up stories in order to get a 'deal".

The president's attorney, Rudy Giuliani, was asked by Reid whether he had been told by Manafort's attorneys that the cooperation deal will not require him to share anything related to the president.

Prosecutors will drop the five remaining charges in DC federal court against Manafort, including money laundering, tax fraud, failing to disclose foreign bank accounts, violating federal foreign lobbying law and lying to the Department of Justice.

In pleading guilty, Manafort, the former Trump campaign chairman, would admit he broke the law - a concession he refused to make throughout his Alexandria trial and since he was charged almost a year ago in Washington.

He will also forfeit assets. He had pleaded guilty in October to lying to Federal Bureau of Investigation agents about the timing and significance of his contacts, including a professor who told him the Russians had "dirt" on Trump's Democratic presidential rival, Hillary Clinton.

Manafort is still subject to whatever sentence is imposed in the Virginia trial.

In February, a USA federal grand jury charged 13 Russian nationals and three Russian companies with plotting to interfere in the 2016 US presidential election. Papadopoulos has since agreed to work with Mueller's investigation. It has not been established that Trump himself knew about this meeting at the time, but Manafort might be able to testify to that as well. He had been jailed since June as a result of the witness tampering charges.
