Today’s Nintendo Direct has been delayed due to a deadly natural disaster

Update Sept. 6th: Today's Nintendo Direct is being delayed due to an natural disaster that hit Hokkaido, Japan. Nintendo promised to provide a new date and time "in the near future". Nintendo has apologised for delaying the Direct but I'm sure you can understand why they chose to do it.

The 6.7-magnitude quake killed at least seven people and injured more than 150 residents, according to an official with the Crisis Management Office of Hokkaido Prefecture Government. The epicenter was within Hokkaido's town of Atsuma, which is near the southern side of the island.

Moreover, it does not appear as though there have been any specific charity drives set up to help those without power, those who have had homes destroyed by the landslide, and to help with quake relief. At least seven have been killed in the tragedy so far, with Reuters reporting that hundreds are injured and 33 missing at this stage. Ultimate Direct followed by the indie highlights presentation hosted exclusively by Nintendo UK then followed by the Nindies event that was just literally a week ago. Earthquakes oftentimes have aftershocks follow them, and Japan's Prime Minister has already begun preparation for these. This disaster, named Typhoon Jebi, also resulted in deaths, injuries, floodings, and power outages.

The Nintendo Direct that the Japanese gaming giant was planning on holding was meant to last for 35 minutes and focus on Switch and 3DS games.

Nintendo Switch fans were going to find out about new games heading to the hit hybrid console during an upcoming Nintendo Direct.

Nintendo Switch sales in Japan have crossed the 5 million unit mark according to latest sales numbers from the land of the rising sun.

Maybe some new information would've been revealed regarding the brand-new Switch online service which is planned to arrive later this month. Before the delay announcement, the landing page indicated that Nintendo will talk about games for both 3DS and the Switch. How this goes will probably depend on the ongoing situation in Japan over the next few days, as the country recovers from these terrible disasters. The rumored Nintendo Direct could reportedly happen as soon as tomorrow on 6 September at 4:00 pm PDT or 7:00 pm EDT.
