Trump disputes Puerto Rico storm death toll, draws outcry

He added: "This was done by the Democrats in order to make me look as bad as possible when I was successfully raising Billions of Dollars to help rebuild Puerto Rico". It made landfall on Puerto Rico on September 20, battering the island with winds of up to 155 miles per hour, ripping buildings apart and uprooting trees.

"I just think if we can keep politics out of it, help those people who are suffering, I just think that's a better response".

-Sen. Ed MarkeyIn a pair of tweets, Trump insisted that "3000 people did not die in the two hurricanes that hit Puerto Rico". As time went by it did not go up by much. That figure was then compared to the number of deaths reported from September 2017, when the hurricane hit, to February 2018, when the island still struggled with blackouts and a shortages of essential supplies on the road to recovery.

After that visit, Trump said Puerto Ricans were fortunate that Maria was not a catastrophe on the scale of Hurricane Katrina, which hit the US Gulf Coast.

The death toll from Maria, the most powerful storm to hit there in nearly a century, was raised last month from 64, a number widely discounted as far too low, to 2,975.

"Why wasn't the response for Puerto Rico, a United States territory, the exact same?" she asked.

As the days went by, the death toll kept increasing, eventually reaching 64.

The "historical relationship between Puerto Rico and Washington is unfair and un-American", said Rossello.

"My teams knew about it but first they will say, "no we cannot use them, ' months later water was no good for human consumption", he tweeted". That's actually lower than the estimate published by Harvard researchers in the New England Journal of Medicine - 4,645 - but it still puts Maria's death toll on a par with 9/11, whose 17th anniversary we just commemorated. "We are confident that the number - 2,975 - is the most accurate and unbiased estimate of excess mortality to date", the school said in a statement.

"Casualties don't make a person look bad", said House Speaker Paul Ryan. Republican Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, who represents South Florida and is retiring from Congress, took the lonely route of rebuking Trump.

"The job that FEMA and law enforcement and everybody did, working along with the governor in Puerto Rico, I think was tremendous".

Trump maintained as recently as Tuesday that his response to the storm was an "incredible unsung success".

Puerto Rico's government-led by a governor with the island's pro-statehood party who is also a Democrat-faced criticism for almost a year after the hurricane that it drastically undercounted the number of fatalities caused by Maria.

'This is what denial following neglect looks like: Mr Pres in the real world people died on your watch.
