UEFA to introduce third club competition

European Club Association (ECA) president Andrea Agnelli has announced that UEFA is set to launch a third European club competition, debuting in the 2021-22 season.

Agnelli also hinted at the ECA General Assembly that further changes to the worldwide calendar are being considered, despite the launch of the Nations League.

European Club Association (ECA) chairman Andrea Agnelli, who is also on Uefa's executive committee, said the "the green light has been given". Agnelli, who is also president of Juventus, occupies one of two seats allocated to club representatives on the UEFA executive committee, which will next meet on September 27 in Nyon, Switzerland.

It would mark a return to three European club competitions after the Cup Winners' Cup was abolished at the end of the 1998-99 season.

Colombo, however, said his members were already very anxious about the impact UEFA's prize money is having on the "competitive balance in domestic leagues now", let alone what is being planned for 2021-2024.

ECA vice-chairman Dariusz Mioduski later told reporters that "we seem to be entering the last stage of the discussions on how European football will look over the next several years".

In a statement, Uefa said it is "constantly reviewing the format of its competitions and is looking at a variety of options".

It said various ideas would be discussed "before any decision on potential changes would be made".

Agnelli has been vocal in the past of his desire for big European teams to play more matches against each other with fewer domestic games.

Agnelli also said clubs want a "detailed assessment of the existing global match calendar" after 2024, as the "current model needs modernising".

"The current model needs modernising", Agnelli said.
