Who won Canelo vs GGG's first fight?

Who won Canelo vs GGG's first fight?

Most fans and analysts watching live or at home scored the bout in favor of Gennady Golovkin, so it came as a huge shock when it was announced that judge Adelaide Byrd had turned in a scorecard of 118-110 in favor of Canelo Alvarez.

The controversy surrounding the fight has been well publicized after Canelo failed a drugs test earlier this year pushing back the original rematch date.

A more aggressive approach from Alvarez, however, may well play into Golovkin's hands.

Golovkin (38-0-1, 34 knockouts) is a slight favorite in the rematch, much as he was in the first fight. I defeated the weigh-in, now it's time for me to defeat him on Saturday.

But in March, Canelo sent shockwaves through the sporting world by confirming he had tested positive for clenbuterol - a banned substance believed to help to strip fat and build lean muscle - in two separate tests administered in February.

The 28-year-old vehemently denied any wrongdoing, maintaining he had ingested the drug accidentally as a result of eating contaminated beef from his native Mexico.

"It's a real fight", Golovkin said this week. He can only talk about the doping that got him suspended for six months by Nevada boxing authorities, but he can do something in the ring to alter the perception that his style is too conservative.

Abel Sanchez, who has trained Golovkin at his gym in the San Bernardino Mountains outside Los Angeles since 2011, agrees. "He would have got knocked out the first time, but he decided to make it a track meet". The fight, which takes place at T-Mobile Arena ( strong HBO PPV, 8 p.m. ET /strong ), is a rematch of their controversial split draw last September in an action-packed bout which produced 1.3 million PPV buys.

The official purses were confirmed to ESPN on Friday by the Nevada State Athletic Commission, although both fighters are expected to make upwards of tens of millions more after pay-per-view sales.
